Abstract

The present study was carried out in a small and shallow reservoir (PUC Minas/BH Reservoir) in the campus of the Pontificia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG. The objective was to characterize qualitatively and quantitatively the zooplankton community. Monthly samplings were carried out between June 1997 and June 1998, in the pelagic region, through vertical tow of the water column with a cylindrical-conical net of 35 μm. The characteristics and structure of the community were evaluated using the taxa constancy index, diversity index and equitability. The community was represented by 31 taxa (18 Rotifera, 6 Copepoda, 2 Cladocera and 5 Protozoa). Among the taxa considered constant, most are indicators of environments with low to moderate organic matter content, such as Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus falcatus, Keratella lenzi, among the rotifers and Arcella vulgaris, among protozoa. The mean diversity was 1.96 Nats.ind-1 and the equitability was 0.54. The presence of Thermocyclops decipiens associated with the diversity index suggests an eutrophic tendency of eutrophy in this water body.
