Abstract

The evolution of sex is one of the challenges of evolutionary biology, the existence of sex is linked to the acceleration of the rate of evolution and, probably, the temporal escape of predators and parasites. In most species, the ratio of males to females is close to 1: 1. In the species of cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea there are no studies on the subject. The objective of this work was to evaluate the sex ratio of Nauphoeta cinerea. 100 individuals were collected at random from a population already existing in the UFTM Ecology & Evolution laboratory. 42 females and 58 males were observed. The sex ratio showed deviation for males, being statistically significant, with the proportion of 1.38 males being observed: 1 female; with χ² = 2.56 and P <0.05. There are studies on sexual behavior and dimorphism, but no studies have been found on what could influence the sex ratio of this species, therefore, more information on the biology, life history and sex ratio of N. cinerea is needed.
