Abstract

The Upper Paraná River Basin harbors a remarkable diversity of fish species. However, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding species richness in smaller hydrographic systems. This study aimed to assess the fish diversity of Roda d’Água Stream, located in the city of Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, an urban environment subjected to anthropogenic pressures. Sampling was conducted at four sites along the stream's longitudinal gradient during both dry and rainy seasons. A total of 671 individuals were collected, representing three orders, six families, and ten species. Characiformes was the most abundant order, accounting for 79.9% of all individuals, followed by Cyprinodontiformes, which represented 10.97%. The species Psalidodon paranae was the most representative across all sampling sites. The presence of a non-native species, Poecilia reticulata, was also recorded. Despite the anthropogenic influence on the stream, a moderate level of species richness was observed. Nevertheless, the high abundance of tolerant and generalist species, particularly Poecilia reticulata, combined with the low representation of more sensitive species, may indicate ecological alterations within the fish community. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining preserved reaches in urban environments and implementing monitoring and conservation actions.
