Abstract

Abstract: Objective: to analyze possible benefits and harms arising from intermittent fasting (IF) as a dietary strategy for weight loss. Methods: This is a systematic review, prepared according to SPICE strategy criteria and developed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The search for articles was performed in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). Only original articles, available in English and Portuguese, published between the years 2017-2022, were considered. Results: there was no consensus regarding the IF protocol among the recruited studies, since the IF time ranged between 10 and 24 hours, and there is also an IF 5:2 modality, in which fasting is performed in two days of the week. In general, the strategies considered the JI to be safe, although there is a high dropout rate in studies with longer follow-up times. The performance of the JI was associated with weight loss, reduction of glycemic levels and body fat. As adverse effects, the increase in body temperature and changes in blood clotting stand out. Conclusions: JI is an effective strategy for weight loss in a short time, although the dropout rate after initial results is high, which may predispose to later weight gain.
