Abstract

Abstract: Objectives: To characterize and analyse the evolution of the competitive performance of rowers in the rowing world championships, from 2010 to 2018 in Scull-type boats. Method: Data from 2,640 regattas were observed, in the Single, Double and Four Scull events, in the Junior, Sub-23, Senior, light and heavyweight, male and female, who competed in the A and B finals in the rowing world championships from 2010 to 2018. After filtering for possible outliers, competitive performance scores ??representing the 2nd, 25th, 50th, 75th, 95th, and 98th percentiles were calculated for each group of rowers. Results: The maximum performance of the rowers in the world championships occurs in the Senior category, for both sexes and weight category. There is a decrease in the rate of improvement in performance as athletes age, except for female heavyweight athletes possibly due to an early maturation process in relation to men. Conclusions: This study presents competitive performance benchmarks in rowing world championships, in three different boats and in all existing age and weight categories for both sexes. The maximum performance of the rowers in the world championships is reached in the Senior category. The rate of improvement in performance, which occurs during the athletes' careers, is similar for all boats, with the exception of female heavyweight athletes.
