INFLUENCE OF LEISURE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL ON ELDERLY QUALITY OF LIFE
Abstract
Objective: To assess the influence of leisure-time physical activity levels on the quality of life of elderly individuals. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. Thirty-two elderly individuals of both sexes participated, with the following characteristics: age, 65.59 ± 6.11 years; body mass, 66.46 ± 13.39 kg; and height, 150.25 ± 6.35 cm. They were members of the senior extension program at Estácio de São Luís University. The elderly participants were divided into three groups based on quartiles, as follows: (G1) 180 min/week; (G2) >180 - 720 min/week; and (G3) >720 min/week. For the assessment of quality of life, the Medical Outcomes Study - Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire was administered. To compare the differences between the domains of the SF-36, the Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction was utilized. For comparisons between the active group (150 to 299 min/week) and highly active group (? 300 min/week), the Mann-Whitney U test was employed. Spearman correlation was used to assess the relationship between physical activity levels and quality of life domains. Results: Elderly individuals classified as Highly Active demonstrated a higher domain in functional capacity compared to Active individuals. G3 showed a higher score in functional capacity compared to G1 and G2. There was a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.415) between physical activity level and functional capacity. Conclusion: Leisure-time physical activity level positively influences the functional capacity of elderly individuals.
