USE OF DENTAL PROSTHESIS AMONG ELDERLY: A SOCIAL PROBLEM

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify and describe socio-demographic characteristics, care in the conservation of the prosthesis, type of limitation or interference arising from use. It is a descriptive transversal study conducted with 167 elderly patients with dentures in a coverage area of Family Health of a municipality of Minas Gerais /Brazil. Data collection was conducted in households or health unit. The results showed higher frequencies for age range 60|-70 years (71.9%), elementary school (64.1%), earn a living wage (58.5%) and makes use of prosthesis 20|-40 years (49.7%), most have inadequate prostheses (70.1%), but performs proper hygiene (87.4%), 40% complain of discomfort, 60% had exchanged prosthesis and 75% did not receive any information about maintenance of the prosthesis. It is emphasized that the pursuit of oral health user prosthesis depends on the ongoing professional guidance. Descriptors: Denture complete; Oral health; Dental Care for Aged.
