Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in various locations (canteen, the toilets, the water fountain and courtyard) of the prison institution at a city of Goiás, Brazil. Samples were collected using a transparent adhesive tape (Scotch Durex or type), this tape was applied to the surface of each place searched and subsequently replaced on a slide for microscopy, slides were read by two examiners, directly in microscopy common optical, increases in 100-400 times. In all, 177 samples were collected, nine (5.1%) positive for Ascaris lumbricoides, one (0.5%) had mites and other (0.5%) had a cyst Endolimax nana. All positive slides with Ascaris lumbricoides referred to the canteen (stove, freezer, counter, pot, basket of vegetables, knife) and samples of Endolimax nana and mites were present in the toilets (toilets). The prison institution is considered a risk place for people who attend.
