Temporal trend of the speech-language pathology workforce in the Brazilian Unified Health System

Objective: to analyze the temporal trend of the speech-language pathology workforce. Methods: quantitative, ecological time-series study on the availability of speech-language pathology professionals in the Brazilian Unified Health System. Data were extracted from the Brazilian National Registry of Health Establishments, considering the month of January for each year, from 2008 to 2024, and analyses of temporal trend (joinpoint regression), both at regional and national levels. Results: there was an increase in the speech-language pathology workforce in the Unified Health System in all regions of Brazil during the studied period, with emphasis on the North (10.1%) and Northeast (9.1%) regions, which presented the highest percentage growth. The Southeast region maintained the largest number of speech therapists in all observed years. The most significant growth in all regions occurred in the first years of the time series, especially between 2008 and 2010. Conclusion: there was an increase in the speech therapy workforce in the Brazilian Unified Health System and the public health policies implemented or strengthened during the period analyzed may have contributed to this growth.
