Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of hydroconditioning technique involving controlled cycles of hydration and dehydration (HD) on the germination of A. urundeuva seeds from three natural populations in Pernambuco, when subjected to water stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution with different osmotic potentials (0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.4, and -0.6 MPa). The seeds were subjected to 0, 1, and 2 HD cycles and placed to germinate at a temperature of 25 °C. Germination parameters were assessed. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test at a 5% probability level. It was observed that both one and two cycles of discontinuous hydration positively influenced the germination parameters of seeds from only one provenance, provenance 3, with positive results—surpassing the control treatment—limited to the 0 and -0.2 MPa potentials. Provenance 1, compared to the others, showed higher averages for the analyzed parameters; however, it did not respond positively to the HD treatment. The results suggest the possible influence of epigenetic factors and the physiological quality of the seeds, indicating the need for further studies with different populations of A. urundeuva to evaluate their behavior under water stress following HD treatment.
