Abstract

Social wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) build their nests on different substrates, such as on the undersurface of leaves, tree trunks, human buildings or natural cavities, and these are frequently attacked by parasitoids, which is one of the main mortality factors for these insects. In this context, this study aimed to: I) obtain information about nesting and the substrates used by social wasps, and evaluate the similarity of these insect communities between the dry and rainy seasons in the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park (PNGSV) and II) check the occurrence of parasitoids in these wasp nests. The study was carried out in four campaigns, from September 2022 to April 2023 in search of colonies of these vespids, where the nesting substrate and the season of each colony were recorded. 163 colonies of 25 species of 11 genera of social wasps were found. Of these, 13 species used exclusively natural structures for nesting, which shows the importance of preserving natural areas to preserve these species. There was no statistical difference between social wasp communities between the dry and rainy seasons of the PNGSV, indicating the importance of protected rivers and paths that provide water throughout the year, making the environment favorable to maintain the population of these wasps. Furthermore, 39 nests of 12 species of social wasps were collected, and in only two nests of two different species, Mischocyttarus cassununga and Polistes ferreri, the presence of two parasitoids was recorded in each nest, two species of the genus Toechorychus, family Ichneumonidae.
