Abstract
This research is entitled Criteria for Recruitment and Selection of Candidates for Basic Teacher Education: trainers and trainees perception, and aims at analysing the recruitment and selection process of candidates for the training of primary school teachers at the Teachers Training Institute (IFP) of Nampula. To answer this objective the following research question was devised: to what extent do the criteria for the recruitment and selection of candidates for the training of primary school teachers used in Nampula IFP contribute to the selection of suitable trainees? The research is exploratory in nature, with a qualitative focus, and involved 20 subjects, being 10 trainees and 10 trainers. The data was collected through the semi-structured interview technique and analysed through content analysis. The research results show that the criteria used in the recruitment and selection of candidates for teaching in basic education need to be improved by diversifying the sources of recruitment used and the inclusion of essay-argumentative evidence, practical exams and psychological tests in the process of selection. The following are the main constraints in the selection process: lack of ethical duty compliance on the part of the trainers, the overvaluation of the interview scores and the application of the multiple choice exam, which makes it difficult to choose candidates with the skills and competences required for teaching. Therefore it is suggested that the selection emphasis should be based on competency, which aims at bringing to the organization professionals who can develop their potential in a continuous manner, performing relevant functions regarding to their position with efficiency, effectiveness and responsibility.
