The present work aims to obtain a characterization of the water quality of the urban stretch of the Itapecerica river, in the municipality of Divinópolis (MG), through some physical, chemical and microbiological variables. Water collections for physical-chemical and microbiological analyzes were carried out monthly, during the period from April 2002 to March 2003, at 6 points along the urban stretch of the Itapecerica River in Divinópolis. The samples were taken in the surface layer of the water column, approximately 1 to 2 meters from the edge of the water body. The results obtained through analyzes of pH, electrical conductivity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and fecal coliforms indicate high values, mainly for the fecal contamination indicator, which leads to deterioration in water quality.
