Abstract

Climate education is a fundamental right for all individuals, particularly children and adolescents, in this time of uncertainties. The responsibility for environmental education falls to any society that aspires to be equitable and sustainable for all its members, and the school is where this conversation on environmental issues occurs on a daily and systematic basis. This article presents projects developed by professors from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) who are attempting to identify methodologies for integrating climate education based on their academic references and experiences. The overarching theme of food is approached from political, environmental and public health viewpoints, with activities carried out at UFRJ's Laboratory school (Colégio de Aplicação - CAp). The theme of waste production and disposal dialogues with food through activities on the separation of waste generated in school lunches and reflections on consumption carried out with students as part of the implementation of selective collection by the "Recicla CAp", and also in other public and private schools through university outreach programmes. Additionally, the “Socialist Almanac of Educational Practices” is introduced, a material produced by a research and outreach collective from the Faculty of Education at UFRJ. Based on the axes of waste/consumption, food, water and territories, the Almanac provides activities that can be implemented in schools, science fair and other spaces, with a bibliography, glossary and suggestions for materials. This text is a small contribution towards building possibilities for the massive and diverse challenges facing education in the light of environmental collapse.
