Abstract

Traditional knowledge is one of the foundations of social construction in Brazil. Indigenous peoples, quilombolas, riverine communities, rubber tappers, and fishermen form rich and diverse cultures that manage natural resources with efficiency and respect. However, the distancing from nature, as well as the separation of human beings from their historical roots, has contributed to the worsening of the "biocultural amnesia" of contemporary society. In the educational field, the supremacy of a Eurocentric science reinforces this biocultural amnesia, denying space for traditional knowledge to become part of the curriculum. This article seeks, based on an empirical initiative, to produce evidence of the importance of activities focused on the recovery of biocultural memory, an intercultural education that can also contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.
