Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is currently considered a global epidemic. In non-diabetic women, pregnancy is associated with extreme changes to their energetic metabolism, therefore, Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) refers to any level of intolerance to carbohydrates resulting in hypoglycemia of variable levels, and with onset or diagnosis during pregnancy. This descriptive, cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of GDM by analyzing the medical records of pregnant women who attended prenatal care at Basic Health Units in Vitória, Espírito Santo, between January and October, of 2011. A total of 396 records were assessed. It was found that 23 (5.8%) reported GDM, with fasting blood glucose values above 92mg/dL, while 373 (94.2%) reported values below 92mg/dL. The risk factors associated to the tests are key to a better diagnosis of the disease. The continuous prevalence of GDM in the studied population calls for special attention from health professionals.
