Abstract

This article analyzes a piece of news published on the UOL portal in 2018 to discuss reading this genre in the classroom. Therefore, the conceptual framework is the Critical Discourse Analysis, more precisely Van Dijk (2015)'s theory about the relationship between discourse and power. In addition, the article uses the notions of stereotype, peasant identity, and memory. The results show that the peasant is a violent subject according to the (neo)liberal perspective. On the other hand, based on the relationship between discourse, practice, and social transformation, a second reading of the news is possible from the perspective of Peasant Education, in which the peasant is fighting for his rights. Thus, the paper has a critical nature and discusses the role of the teacher as an agent of social change.
