Through a historical-theoretical journey we argument why the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are unsustainable form an environmental perspective, and little serious from a political point of view, although they are imposed as a central educational strategy and co-opt the environmental education. Opposite to that, the text vindicates the importance and trajectory of the environmental education in Latin America, highlights its difference to the proposed perspective of the SDG and so vindicate the importance also of environmental thought. Finally, the text highlights the importance of the universities as a strategic place for the production and reproduction of knowledge. The proposal then is that environmental education in the universities have to be understood as the formation of environmental criteria in the future professionals independently of their discipline, carrier.  For that there are some examples as well as a methodological proposal for the environmentalization.
